Google Explores Re-Ranking Search Results Using +1 Button Data

It’d be interesting to see if Google started doing this, I think it’s potentially a very risk move.

But if Google’s going to start using those +1 votes, the company is virtually inviting the world’s spammers and blackhat SEO magicians to flood its social networking system with fake profiles and fake votes — potentially ruining it and possibly making the problem of search spam even worse.

That’s exactly the same conclusion I came to, and that’s why it could well be the riskiest thing Google could do. We have to remember that the search engine is all Google has going for it and is what drives most of the advertising clicks, and by extension their revenue. If you can no longer trust the search results, then people will stop using it and Google will lose revenue.
