Mobile commerce through the affiliate channel

An interesting look at the mobile sales seen through one the affiliate window network. The graph below shows that mobile commerce is clearly taking off, and that we all need to think about establishing mobile versions of our websites (especially ecommerce ones).

One thing that strikes me here is how iPad usage is about the same as iPhone usage, despite being a relatively new product and having a much lower install base, this goes to show that people are using the iPad rather than using a laptop, netbook or similar device.

The article stresses the importance of trying to create mobile versions of our websites:

With such a vast amount of activity being generated through mobile devices advertisers need to sit up and take notice. Without a website fully optimised for mobile, customers looking to purchase on the move may find an inadequate user experience and opt to purchase elsewhere.

I wouldn’t necessarily say this was true of the iPad, the iPad has a resolution which most websites are designed for (1024 x 768) and so people visiting on an iPad will get a desktop experience, as the screen and machine can handle this (unless your site is heavily based on flash).



How HTML5 Is Aiding in Cross-Platform Development

At the House of Type we’ve developed a couple of HTML5 apps for mobile devices (mainly iPad), and it’s been very interesting and rewarding.

People will insist that iOS is a closed platform device, yet anyone can make a HTML5 application and it will be supported by the iPhone. I don’t see that as being a closed platform.

If you’re a startup and don’t have the resources to develop two versions of your app, consider developing a HTML5 app first.




Apple, Campbell’s Say iAds Twice as Effective as TV

If that’s the case it’s very impressive!

However, I think the novelty of the platform has a lot to do with it, these kind of ads on mobile devices are still novel for users, it’d be interesting to see if this is still the case in 5 years time.

Comparing it to TV seems silly, the ubiquity of TV has meant that people have become somewhat desensitised to most TV ads. Apple’s high cost of entry (minimum spend of $1 million – apparently) also means this isn’t available to all but the wealthiest advertisers.

Once the costs of production, and the cost of entry decreases, then iAd is going to become a HUGE business for Apple.







Magento Store Mobile Previewer Launch

Since the launch of the Magento Mobile I’ve wanted to see how some of our client’s websites may look as mobile apps, or how to demo this functionality to them.

So it’s great to see that Magento is giving us the ability to do this with the launch of Magento Store Mobile Previewer. This consists of two parts:

1. The Magento Mobile Extension for your website which allows you to configure your application, with logos, etc.

2. A free iPhone application which connects to your website and allows you to view the store, however all of the checkout functionality is removed.
